The hoodie is inspired by the Japanese phrase samurai, in Japanese, the word samurai means "warrior or knight." Samuraiwere the hereditary military nobilit y and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan from the late 12th century until their abolition in the late 1870s during the Meji era.
